Synecdoche has been running one of the most consistent comedy manga in seinen publishing for close to a decade. Plus-Sized Elf, known in Japanese as Erufu-san wa Yaserarenai, launched in Comic Gum in December 2016 and never really stopped: the original eight-volume run wrapped in 2020, and the sequel Second Helping! has been ongoing under Akita Shoten since October 2021. It's an ecchi fantasy comedy serialized in Dokodemo Young Champion, and it works harder than its premise suggests. The 2024 anime brought a new wave of readers in, and a confirmed Japanese volume drops later this month. This article covers everything officially confirmed for 2026 and will be updated as new announcements come through.

About Plus-Sized Elf

The original Erufu-san wa Yaserarenai launched in Comic Gum under Wani Books in December 2016, ran for eight volumes, and concluded in June 2020. The sequel, Second Helping! (Shin Erufu-san wa Yaserarenai), started in Dokodemo Young Champion from Akita Shoten in October 2021 and is still ongoing. Seven Seas Entertainment handles English publication for both. The series sits in ecchi fantasy comedy with a seinen audience. Each chapter rotates through a mythical creature dealing with a health problem, and the comedy comes from placing a mundane massage clinic next to a cast of elves, mermaids, and ogres. You can start with the English volumes through any major retailer, or catch the Season 1 anime (12 episodes plus 2 ONAs, studio Elias, Summer 2024) on HIDIVE.

Main Characters in Plus-Sized Elf

The series works because of its ensemble. Here are the five you'll spend the most time with.

Tomoatsu Naoe

A licensed massage therapist whose clinic becomes the default gathering point for every overweight mythical creature in the area. He's professional, caring, and almost impossible to rattle. His consistency is what makes the comedy land: he takes every client seriously no matter how absurd the situation gets.

Elfuda

A high elf stuck on Earth with a French fry addiction severe enough to prevent her from fitting back through the portal home. Cheerful, greedy, and unashamed about it. Her progress is real but slow and frequently reversed by her own choices. Most readers are on her side before the end of chapter two.

Kuroeda

A dark elf with a proud, competitive personality who would rather do almost anything than admit she needs outside help. Her dynamic with Elfuda is one of the better ongoing threads in the series: genuine rivalry between two people who spend too much time at the same clinic to pretend they don't know each other.

Mero

A merrow with a soft-spoken personality and physical traits that create specific challenges for Naoe's consultations. She's the calm one in a loud cast. Her chapters tend to run warmer than the others, which makes her a favourite for readers who like the series' gentler side.

Oga

An ogre whose clinic visits are about performance and competition rather than weight loss. She broadens the series past its initial premise and brings direct energy whenever she appears. A solid counterweight to the more diet-focused storylines.

Plus-Sized Elf Story Overview

Naoe runs a massage and health consultation clinic. His newest client turns out to be Elfuda, a high elf from another world who developed a fast food habit severe enough to prevent her from fitting back through the portal home. Her only option is to lose the weight, and Naoe's clinic is where she starts.

From there, the series expands into a rotating ensemble: dark elves, mermaids, and ogres cycle through the waiting room across the original run and the ongoing sequel. The health themes are handled with more sincerity than the genre usually manages, and Naoe's professionalism keeps the series grounded. It's right for readers who want something light and consistent.
