Almark Release 2026: Upcoming Dates, Characters & What to Expect

Updated May 2026
The character designs for Arumaku, published in English as Almark, were created by Posuka Demizu, the artist behind The Promised Neverland. That name doesn't attach to a project without reason. The original light novel is written by Noboru Yamada, with manga art by Hiyoto Yunoki, serialized on Kadokawa's KadoComi platform. Yen Press handles both formats in English. It's a magic school fantasy built around class prejudice, cultural identity, and a protagonist who has never cast a spell in his life. English manga Volume 3 is confirmed for July 28, 2026. This article covers everything officially confirmed for 2026 and will be updated as new announcements come through.

About Almark
Almark started as a web novel on Shosetsuka ni Naro in October 2019, then moved to print under Kadokawa's Media Factory imprint. The manga adaptation launched on KadoComi in July 2022 and is ongoing at seven Japanese volumes. Yen Press released English manga Volume 1 in July 2025, Volume 2 in February 2026, and has Volume 3 confirmed for July 28, 2026. The English light novel reached Volume 2 in April 2026.
It's a magic school story, but the setting resists the usual comfort of that genre. Almark's world splits between a frozen, war-scarred North and a prosperous southern academy culture, and the protagonist arrives at the Norkh Institute as someone the institution was never designed for. The tensions are about class and belonging, not just combat rankings. Reviewers have compared it in feel to Reign of the Seven Spellblades. English volumes are available through Yen Press and major retailers.
Main Characters in Almark
The cast is built around Almark and the figures who define his first year at the Norkh Institute.
Almark
The protagonist, son of a celebrated Northern mercenary vice-captain. He grew up on battlefields instead of in classrooms, arrived at a prestigious magic academy without ever having cast a spell, and refused to see that as a limitation. Rational, observant, and stubborn in the best sense. His arc is less about mastering magic and more about proving that someone from the North belongs in rooms built for the South.
Reiz
Almark's father and vice-captain of the Black Wolf Riders mercenary company. He sends Almark south to study rather than follow him into a dangerous profession. It looks like protection; it reads as expectation. Reiz appears rarely, but the weight of his reputation follows Almark through every chapter and shapes how the other students see him before he opens his mouth.
Tohrk Shifei
Almark's primary rival at the Norkh Institute, a nobleblooded student from the privileged South who treats Northern enrollment as an insult. He's the clearest embodiment of the cultural divide the series is about, and his relationship with Almark is the sharpest dynamic in the early volumes. By Volume 3, circumstances force them into reluctant cooperation, and the series handles that shift without giving either character an easy out.
Eldo
A classmate at the Norkh Institute who becomes a catalyst in the Volume 3 storyline. When Eldo and others are captured by a creature outside the school grounds, the crisis forces Almark and Tohrk to put their rivalry aside and work together. Eldo represents the broader student body caught in the crossfire of larger conflicts, and their role in that arc shifts the stakes beyond personal rivalry.
The Headmaster of the Norkh Institute
The reason Almark gets admitted at all. He was saved by Almark's father years before the story begins and repays that debt by enrolling his son. He has genuine confidence in Almark's potential where everyone else sees only a rough Northerner who can't cast. His position gives Almark a foothold, but doesn't smooth out what's waiting for him inside the building.
Almark Story Overview
The world splits along a line between the frozen, war-hardened North and the peaceful, magic-rich South. Almark grew up in the North, shaped by campaigns and cold rather than classrooms. When the headmaster of the Norkh Institute calls in a debt owed to his father, Almark finds himself enrolled in one of the South's most prestigious magic academies, having never cast a spell in his life.
What follows is less a power fantasy and more a story about navigating a system that wasn't built for someone like him. Surrounded by nobleblooded students who view Northern enrollment as an insult, and with a rival in Tohrk Shifei who makes that hostility personal, Almark has to find his own path while carrying his father's reputation and his homeland's expectations. The series rewards patience. The full synopsis is on the Yen Press series page.
